‘What’s the smallest thing your senior dog does that melts your heart?’: Tender tales of canine love that only grows with age

Our pets are our everything, and when we see our pets age it can be a jarring experience. But in life, these natural processes are something to accept, not reject, and it can be rather beautiful to experience your doggo in old age, just the same as when they're puppies. 

Senior dogs are uniquely tender. Puppies are known for their rumbunctious attitudes, their ability to destroy a whole home, and their sometimes difficulty to be trained. Puppies are like loose canons, they really have a mind of their own and can be difficult to tame and control. But once you've mastered them and their chaos, they become your best friend, your canine best friend. And when that best friend becomes a slow moving, staid, senior dog, there's a tenderness that's unlike anything else. Small habits and rituals carry so much, they can carry an entire history of love. These moments may seem banal to someone else, but for you and your pup you know how meaningful it is. Your dog has loved you its whole life, and you've loved it. The years of memories all stand before you at once when you look at your senior dog, moving slower than usual, but happier than ever. 

The narrator here has a 14 year old dog, Rocky. Every night around 9 pm Rocky comes to his chair, sighs deeply, and rests his head on his owner's knee for a minute, before going to his bed for sleep. The owner says Rocky is saying, "goodnight, I love you" in his own way. He wants to know what others are saying about their doggy's habits, the little moments that mark and define their dog, the idiosyncrasies that say, "our relationship is special, and this is love." Laugh, cry, and smile to these adorably tender stories of doggos and their owners.

  • These stories really do melt the heart. There's something innate in love that takes the time to notice the small details. It's a telltale sign of being in love to notice the small stuff. Our pets really do give us such a vast and warm sense of love and fulfilment in the world.
